The tree's shadow lay over them like a blanket.
"Thomas."
"Aye lass?"
"Kiss me."
Thomas didn't know what to do for the best.
This was shocking! So forward! Lassies just didn't do such a thing.
But here she was, not even asking him, but telling him to kiss her. Shameful!
But somehow very exciting!
He turned to look at her and saw that she had
her eyes closed and her mouth was puckered. He leaned over and pecked
her on the cheek.
"Daftie! On me mouth!"
His lips sought hers and he experienced for the first
time, the joyful fear of kissing a girl. Many times he had lain awake at
the bakery imagining just this moment. Even the surroundings were similar to
what had been drawn in his imagination. He put his left arm around her,
his hand grabbing her neck as he pressed his mouth into hers.
